PART 2
The officers intercepted Melissa before she could disappear down the hallway. Inside my fireproof lockbox they found my property deed, Social Security card, passport, military discharge papers, and several unsigned checks.
Those documents had been locked inside the closet in my bedroom.
Ryan insisted he had removed the box only because he was afraid I might misplace it. Detective Bennett calmly asked why Melissa had been carrying it toward the back door.
Neither of them offered an answer.
The home-equity application listed Ryan as my financial representative. Attached to the paperwork was a power of attorney supposedly signed by me six months earlier.
The signature looked remarkably authentic.
The notary seal belonged to a woman named Donna Mills, who happened to be Melissa’s cousin.
I had never even met Donna.
The bank immediately suspended the loan process. Investigators confiscated Ryan’s laptop, both of their phones, the forged paperwork, and the old debit card they had unsuccessfully tried to use that morning.
The following day, Samuel and I carefully reviewed every financial account connected to my name.
The missing pension money was only part of the story.
Ryan had opened three credit cards using my Social Security number. He had also switched my phone bill, insurance premiums, and property taxes to automatic withdrawals from my checking account while repeatedly telling me he had been paying those expenses himself.
The truth was far different.
My pension covered every bill.
Whatever remained, he spent.
