All my life, my mother and I had a PERFECT PRE-CHRISTMAS TRADITION, every December 20th.
"Except for the last time. I saw her earlier this year. When I told her what was going on, she agreed to let me meet you. She told me about this little tradition you have."
What could he have possibly said to make Mom change her mind?
What is it?
could well have told him so that
Mom changes her mind?
"You see, I'm sick. My liver is failing. I need a donor."
Everything became clear: why he was there, and why Mom had made me promise to follow my heart when the time came.
"So you're here," I told him, "asking me to save you."
I'm here to ask you to think about this. I've suffered all my life from having abandoned you and your mother. I tried to redeem myself, but your mother wouldn't let me. I hope you'll give me that chance.
And there it was, that was the choice my mother had left me: to do what I thought was right.
Everything made sense.
He suddenly seemed small, but full of hope.
I could now see my own features on his face. The shape of my nose. My chin. It was my father, a man I thought was dead, and he was asking me to save him.
But how could I do it?
It would have been difficult enough if he had simply asked for forgiveness, but he wanted a piece of my liver!
