My sister's children broke my TV and she refused to pay for it... but karma decided otherwise.

" What ? "

"Jayden told me. Word for word. You said they could throw the ball into my living room."

Another pause. Then, "I... maybe I did say it. But I didn't mean to break anything!"

"Children don't hear nuances," I replied flatly. "They just remember what they're allowed to do once."

She sighed, her voice calmer now. "You don't need to be self-important."

"I'm not. I just hope you understand how I felt."

She didn't answer. She just hung up.

Later that evening, Sam came home and I told him everything.

He smiled. "I suppose the universe has its own speed dial number."

I laughed for the first time in days, not because I wanted revenge, but because, ultimately, she couldn't get past the truth.

A few days later, Brittany sent me a text message out of the blue:

"You were right. I should have listened to you. I'm sorry."

It wasn't long. Not dramatic. Just calm. Almost as if she had run out of excuses and had nowhere left to hide.

For a second, I stared at the screen, wondering if she really meant it or if it was just guilt whispering in her thumbs. But I didn't need to dissect it.

I replied:

"It happens. Maybe we both learned something."

She replied with a red heart emoji. Coming from Brittany, that was practically a full-blown confession.

And that's how things ended.

Now, whenever I walk past the space where our television used to be — that bare spot on the wall that we haven't filled yet — I don't feel bitter.
