A spontaneous impulse, even before thinking about it
There was no internal deliberation. In a flash, the bank card was already being held out to the cashier. "I'll pay the difference," she said simply. The little girl looked up, visibly astonished, then stepped forward to offer a long, sincere, and completely unexpected hug.
It was at that moment that she whispered softly, as if sharing a secret:
"It's for my mother. She's very sick."
Five little words. And the cake no longer had the same meaning at all.
